Autumn sown cereals

Sowing cereals in autumn offers the advantages of higher yields and spreading out your harvest, but weeds must be controlled early.

This month's tips for sowing cereals

» Select the correct seeding rate for autumn/winter planted cereals and apply a pre emergence herbicide within 48 hours of sowing.

» Pre-emergent herbicides help keep cereal paddocks clean heading into winter.

» If following on from a cereal crop the previous year, watch out for higher disease loading on early planted crops, and use a good quality fungicide in early spring.

» Watch out for late insect pressure in brassicas. Depending on the weather and insect pressure, control may be required.
