Our Sustainability
Here at PGG Wrightson and Fruitfed Supplies we are committed to future-proofing the horticultural industry and our natural environment for future generations. We believe the horticultural sector plays an important role in improving production efficiencies and helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions having recognised the current and future potential effects of climate change.
The PGG Wrightson Sustainability Strategy to 2030 set a range of goals across the business. The Fruitfed Supplies team helps growers meet their own regulatory and sustainability goals while also putting measures in place to follow Fruitfed Supplies’ own sustainability journey.
Plasback is an accredited organisation under the Waste Minimisation Act 2008. Its Product Stewardship Scheme recovers used farm and orchard plastics for recycling using a bin and liner system for disposal. Growers accumulate their plastic in the recycling bins (one for each stream of packaging) and Plasback collects them from the orchard or vineyard. Popular product packaging for recycling include Erbsloh Bentonite bags, shrink wrap, and bulk sugar and perlite bags that can be easily collected at the end of the vintage.
Agrecovery is a Product Stewardship Programme under the Waste Minimisation Act 2008 offering agrichemical container recycling for farmers and growers. About 50 percent of agri-chemical containers used on-farm are currently recycled through Agrecovery. Growers and farmers can bring containers from participating brand owners and product manufacturers to over 90 collections sites through New Zealand, including Fruitfed Supplies stores. Look for the AgRecovery logo on the pack or bag to find out whether it can be recycled.
TerraCycle, an international company specialising in collecting and repurposing waste, partnered with AB Biotek, a yeast producer, to create the AB Biotek Recycling Laminate Program for wineries, breweries and distilleries. All brands of multi-layer laminate packaging for yeast, nutrient and hops bags can now be recycled and aggregated to produce new products under the programme. Collection at the end of the vintage is organised through a Fruitfed Supplies Representative for all customers of AB Biotek.
PGG Wrightson and Fruitfed Supplies is undertaking a strategic, multi-year approach to upgrading lighting to LED across our store network. Over 40 projects have been completed so far, with many stores seeing energy savings exceeding 50%. PGG Wrightson also purchases Certified Renewable Energy to demonstrate our commitment to taking climate action, meaning the electricity consumed across our stores is carbon neutral.
Agrecovery has launched a new recycling scheme for small woven polypropylene (PP) bags; plastic no.5, 25 kg or under. This Product Stewardship Scheme, run by Agrecovery, offers a sustainable solution for recycling seed, feed, and fertiliser packaging.

The Fruitfed Supplies team in Blenheim has achieved certification against the Global Standards Food Safety for storage and distribution of winery inputs and additives. BRCGS helps builds confidence in the supply chain and helps provide assurance to customers that products are safe, legal and of high quality. Fruitfed Supplies has food safety programmes in place which help ensure safe and traceable products as they move through the system.
