Busy Year for Massey Scholarship Recipient
The 2021 Fruitfed Supplies Massey Scholarship recipient, Dylan Hall, is now embarking on his professional career in horticulture.
Dylan says it was a busy, albeit unusual final year of study for his Bachelor of Agricommerce degree with a major in
“As has happened worldwide, Covid meant classes moved online, meaning we missed valued in-person interactions with lecturers and classmates," Dylan says. "Lab work and practical, in-the-field learning for our horticultural papers weren’t possible.”
On the positive side, Dylan enjoyed his role as Vice-President of the Massey Horticulture Society helping organise member activities while some events were cancelled, there were valuable orchard visits and meetings with key industry personnel.
Dylan joined a Massey University team of four competing in the 2021 Food Distribution Research Society student food marketing challenge. “We were up against a number of universities, mostly in the United States, creating a marketing strategy for a client, The Seam, for their open-source, online trading platform for specialty horticulture produce. We submitted a video presentation to the judges, making the top three to pitch our strategy live to The Seam. We were delighted to take out second place.”
The Fruitfed Supplies Scholarship helped Dylan financially and to get his name known. “I was able to meet new people and form new connections which will help as I progress in the horticulture industry.”
This month Dylan joined MG Marketing in their graduate programme. “I am passionate about our industry and now want to do my best to give back to the sector which supported me through the last three years. I appreciate the support that Fruitfed Supplies gave me through the scholarship.”
Applications for the 2022 Fruitfed Supplies Horticulture Scholarship with Massey University opened on 23 January and closes on 23 March 2022.
