There are many wonderful things that makes rural life in Aotearoa so special, one of the biggest? The people and their strong tradition of looking out for one another. From leading the local scout troop to volunteering to weed a public bike track, coaching the junior rugby, or helping organise the A&P show, each act of goodwill is another tie connecting the community. Giving back is a part of rural life.
While generosity of time is rarely in short supply, money to fund these groups and organisations often is. Cash for Communities is one way to offer financial support to the local organisations keeping our communities thriving.
A million reasons to particpate
PGG Wrightson and Ballance Agri-Nutrients partnered in 2011 to create Cash for Communities. The programme donates one dollar for every tonne of eligible fertiliser or 10 litres of agrichemicals purchased to a nominated charity or organisation. Since then, more suppliers have come on board—Adama, Arxada, BASF, Bayer, Corteva Agriscience, FMC, Nufarm, Syngenta, and UPL Open Ag. Together, with the help of our customers, more than $1 million has gone back to the rural community.
A hassle-free fundraiser
Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue covers the largest geographical area in New Zealand.
For PGG Wrightson customers, it is a chance to make the purchases they are already making for their business mean more. They choose their organisation of choice and any eligible purchases made through their PGG Wrightson account between 1 September and 30 November are automatically counted.
For community groups, they register with PGG Wrightson, then encourage members, parents, volunteers, and supporters to nominate them when purchasing qualifying fertiliser or agrichemicals, making it a hassle-free way to raise funds.
Across New Zealand, rural schools, clubs, and community groups rely heavily on fundraising to provide equipment, maintain facilities and create opportunities for their members. Cash for Communities offers another avenue for support without adding another fundraiser to an already busy calendar.
Working together
What makes this programme so valuable is that is harnesses something rural communities do exceptionally well: working together. While one person's purchases may only contribute a small amount, the collective support of an entire community quickly grows into meaningful funding.
For the recipients, these funds may be directed wherever most. From upgrading sports gear, supporting education, improving community facilities, helping fund camps and events, or investing in rural health and wellbeing initiatives. Each donation makes a difference.
For PGG Wrightson, Cahs for Communities is another way of strengthening the connection it has built with rural New Zealand over many generations. By helping local organisations access additional funding, the programme supports not just individual groups, but the wider communities they serve.

For PGG Wrightson account holders, after making your fertiliser or agrichemical purchases this spring, head online to the Cash for Communities website to nominate your chose organisation before 30 November.
