Fertigation on another level

Fertigation on another level

The first automated fertigation unit of its kind in New Zealand is proving its worth on an 80 ha kiwifruit orchard near Kerikeri.

A bespoke FertiDose system has been installed on Craigmore’s Wiroa kiwifruit block, managed by Alan Dobbie, where the aim was to improve the accuracy and frequency of nutrition applications to support vine health and productivity. The original system saw soluble fertilisers mixed in tank loads and applied via the orchard irrigation system. Alan says this worked reasonably well but was labour intensive, taking up to two days to apply a round of fertiliser.

“Because of that time commitment, we probably didn’t it as regularly as we do with the new system,” says Alan. “Now, we can mix up to 30,000 litres with four tonnes of product in the tank and the whole process takes about three hours. The FertiDose system slots into our existing irrigation system to deliver the correct volume of nutrients per hectare. We’re applying nutrients once a week, more of a little and often strategy, and have seen improvements in plant health.” As part of the upgrade, moisture sensors were installed around the orchard to provide valuable data which Alan says has changed the way they are irrigating.

“You don’t want to be running your nutrients past your rootzone due to applying too much water at once. Say the plan is to apply water for three hours a day, rather than running for three consecutive hours, we’re now applying water for three one-hour blocks. We find this keeps nutrients in the rootzone. Our soils are free draining to about 600 mm deep then there’s a limiting layer underneath which was giving us drainage problems when running water in three hour blocks. Now we’re using less water, and about same amount of fertiliser but getting a lot more action from it.” The FertiDose system, which is exclusive to Fruitfed Supplies, is a collaboration between the teams at PGG Wrightson Water, Mark Andrews at PB&J Contracting, and Anthony Samuels from LiquiPro.

Michael Astrop, National Product Manager – Water with PGW, explains: “Anthony is a highly experienced, water sector expert who designed and supports the FertiDose range. For the Craigmore orchard, he built a full turnkey, high-spec automatic fertigation system to their specifications. “We then engaged Mark and his team to support the installation and provide technical backup for this project due to their comprehensive understanding of the irrigation, filtration, and control systems onsite. Mark works closely with Alan to ensure his irrigation and fertigation needs are fully met, collaborating with Anthony and local Fruitfed Supplies Representatives.”

FertiDose units are designed to integrate seamlessly with existing irrigation systems rather than reinvent them. They have been researched and tested in New Zealand orchards to meet local demands. Insights from growers have shaped the engineered, plug-and-play units, built with industry-standard equipment proven reliable across multiple sectors. To ensure durability and chemical compatibility, SCH80 PVC or 316 stainless steel is used for pipework and manifolds. All units are manufactured and tested locally before delivery, guaranteeing quality and performance. Mike adds, “The most critical aspect of any fertigation system is proper setup, particularly mixing in the tank. Tailored mixing options are offered alongside the FertiDose systems to ensure a complete solution.”
