Why use a flystrike protection treatment at docking?
Lambs are the class of stock most at risk from flystrike and in areas where blowflies routinely cause problems, preventative treatments are usually applied to lambs at docking.
As the wounds caused by docking attract flies, any treatment applied must protect until these wounds have completely healed.
It is important to remember that under the Code of Animal Welfare, if sheep are at risk of becoming flystruck, it is the owner's responsibility to take appropriate preventative measures.
CLiKZiN™ Spray-On, CLiK™ Spray-On and now CLiK™ Extra Spray-On are ready-to-use water-based IGR formulations containing the potent active dicyclanil.
The benefits of these water-based products include:
- The wide margin of safety to operators is a significant consideration during docking, where animals are handled closely and contact with the product is unavoidable.
- The wide margin of safety to livestock.
- They are non-flammable, an essential feature when searing irons are used for docking.
- The length of protection against flystrike provided.
- By using the approved Elanco 10 mL docking applicator, 5 to 10 mL can easily be applied to effectively protect the wound. It is important to remember that the area where the product is applied is the area that is protected against flystrike. If a back or shoulder strike is anticipated, the product should be applied directly to these areas too.
- There is no meaningful resistance recorded by strike flies to dicyclanil in New Zealand.
CLiKZiN Spray-On contains 12.5 g per L of dicyclanil and provides flystrike protection for six to nine weeks with a seven-day meat withholding period. CLiK Spray-On contains 50.0 g per L of dicyclanil and provides flystrike protection for up to 18 weeks and has a 35-day meat withholding period for coarse wool sheep and a 56-day meat withholding period for fine wool sheep. CLiK Extra Spray-On contains 65.0 g per L of dicyclanil providing flystrike protection for 14 to 26 weeks with a 21-day meat withholding period.
The protection periods shown on the label of each product indicate the expected duration of protection against body and breech strikes in sheep, and gives an indication of the duration of protection when used after docking.
