A profitable dairy operation relies on the quality and quantity of pasture grown and harvested. One Manawatu farmer is investing in innovative agricultural products and technologies for his pasture to maximise productivity of his dairy operation.
Opiki dairy farmer Shaun Olsen milks 1,300 cows over two properties and reports Vast, a tetraploid perennial ryegrass with AR37 endophyte, is a game-changer for his farm.
"Without good grass, you're buggered. Investing in good grass gives you a strong return,” says Shaun.
To support his pasture-based farming system, Shaun combines grass, fodder beet, chicory, and additional bought-in feed (silage and PKE). He aims to follow a ‘System 3’ approach. This keeps system costs down, while ensuring his cows receive high-quality feed.
Using forage crops, such as fodder beet and chicory, is a key part of Shaun's pasture renewal programme. Each year, Shaun plants 50 hectares of chicory and fodder beet which targets damaged or struggling paddocks. Pastures are then sown, lasting about eight years before they are cycled through crop again.
"Grass health and quality are non-negotiable," says Shaun.
A vast difference
Before it was available for market, PGG Wrightson Seeds Forage Agronomist Holly Phillips ran a successful Vast trial on Shaun’s farm.
“The trial block was pretty impressive. You could visually see the difference in the Vast trial,” says Shaun.
Once commercially available, PGG Wrightson Technical Field Representative Hamish McCallum worked with Shaun to introduce Vast with AR37 endophyte to his entire operation.
Since its incorporation two years ago, Shaun has seen a noticeable increase in overall production.
“Vast is resilient. What I love about it is its ability to stay strong and green when other grasses struggle,” Shaun says.
Vast has an extremely late heading date. It does not go to seed until much later in the spring/summer. While other grasses slow down, the product maintains its colour and quality, even in dry autumn conditions, to allow continuous feed production.
A versatile solution
Vast has proven adaptable across various soil types. For Shaun, who contends with peat soil on his farm, finding one solution for his entire farm is important.
“Peat soil doesn’t work for some grasses, but Vast suits all soil types which is a real bonus. This versatility, combined with its ability to thrive in summer, makes it an ideal choice for our farm,” explains Shaun.
Adaptability, consistency, and versatility makes Vast a reliable solution. From its ability to thrive through dry spells to its consistent growth throughout the year, Vast is helping farmers improve quality and maximise productivity.
