The pipeline for new agrichemicals actives has slowed considerably. The cost of global and local registrations of agrichemicals is now more than $500 million. The timeline to reach market in New Zealand currently takes five to nine years, so relying on older chemistry is common.
What is a generic?
When patents on proprietary products expire, these older products, actives, and formulations are open to be manufactured by other agrichemical companies. These generics—actives that have been around for many years such as MCPA, 2,4-D, Glyphosate, and Paraquat—are now made by a variety of global manufacturers, mostly from China.
Not all generics are the same. Unfortunately, some generics come to market without assurances around purity, efficacy, or crop safety. Farmers and Growers face risks to their crops, whether it is a lack of efficacy or safety, by using untested generics. But knowing which generics put your crops at risk is not easy. As much as 80 percent of the agrichemicals used in New Zealand having the potential or already supplied as a generic. to ensure the reliability of supply and efficacy and quality of manufacture, PGG Wrightson teamed up with a global generic chemcial manufacturer to create reliable, effective products. Then, through our established R&D team, these products are tried and tested extensively before becoming available to our Farmer and Grower customers. These trials ensure every product performs as well as the proprietary brand.
We have collectively branded this generic product range, BlueAg. Its distinctive label design is easily spotted on our store's shelves alongside our other proprietary and generic products. Farmers and Growers can confidently select these products knowing they will perform as promised.
