Miravis® Prime offers powdery mildew control in vineyards

Highly respected wine industry consultant Jeff Sinnott used Miravis® Prime for the first time in the vineyards he managed last season and was very pleased with the level of powdery mildew control.

Formerly the National Technical Viticulturist for Constellation Brands NZ and now an independent viticulture consultant, Jeff has been involved in the wine industry since 1985, working in education, training, research, commercial viticulture and winemaking in key growing regions around the country.

“The incidence of powdery mildew after applying Miravis Prime was virtually zero,” says Jeff, having utilised the advice of Blenheim-based Fruitfed Supplies Technical Horticultural Representative Mike Treloar.

“When compared to what we have been achieving, the powdery mildew control with Miravis Prime was a definite improvement,” Jeff says. “The fungicide also formed part of our strategy to target Botrytis, particularly in blocks where there have been problems in the past. Again, the outcome was very pleasing with lower levels of Botrytis where Mivaris Prime was applied versus our standard programmes.

“In terms of disease control, Miravis Prime is a game changer because it delivered very good outcome in controlling both Botrytis and powdery mildew.”

Jeff says he’s aware that many years of development are required to bring new products to market. “It’s important that we look after the longevity of effective fungicides. With two active ingredients targeting Botrytis, Miravis Prime has built-in resistance management which is a valuable feature to ensure the actives remain effective at controlling Botrytis for years to come.”

From a winemaking perspective, Jeff says that they didn’t come close to approaching the nil residue threshold of 0.01 mg/kg last season. “Where Miravis Prime was applied up to 80 percent cap-fall and no less than 90 days before harvest, residue issues were avoided”
