Salt is an essential component of an animal’s diet. With many soils and pastures naturally low in sodium a supplement is often necessary. A lack of sodium can result in a decline in growth rates and / or milk production. To encourage salt intake by livestock it can be added to stacked hay. Spread the salt over each layer of haybale at a rate of 1 kg for every 10 bales. Alternatively, salt has various other applications around the farm including for weed control and de-icing smooth surfaces outside.
