Guide to checking your farm fences are performing optimally

Within your farm maintenance routine, remember to check your electric fence system for any faults. To get the job done as quickly and easily as possible, here’s a guide on what to look for.

  • When doing repairs, switch off the electricity powering the fencing main, or if your unit has a remote, place the unit on standby.
  • At the main power source, check the unit is performing well.
  • Check the underground or lead-out cables that carry the voltage to the fence line along with the joint clamps. Do this using a fault finder. Place it at the start of the fence, close to energizer or mains unit, to get a reading of the voltage running through the fence line.
  • Heading out into the paddocks, carry a fencing repair kit complete with replacement parts and tools. The kit should include underground cable, joint clamps, insulators (that match your current system), electric crimp sleeves, cut-out switches and a fault finder. Tools are a must-have - a hammer, chain strainer, wire strainer and pliers.
  • Monitor the fence line to ensure objects aren’t touching the fence such as tall grass or branches.
  • If you haven’t looked at the earth system recently, make sure you do to confirm the power along the fence line is reaching all the paddocks.
